The age of card catalogs and going to the library to check out stacks of books, spending hours each day sitting and reading has become a thing of the past for many people. Have people just quit absorbing information? Do they no longer desire to know about the world around them? Well, possibly, but one of the reasons that the scene has changed is partially due to the huge boom of the use of audio books. Audio books have become one of the most widely used ways that many people gain information or get to enjoy a good novel, or even the Bible. Many of the world's classics, new novels and other texts have been translated into an audio version. This craze has caused people to know less about the structure of the English language and grammar, in writing. The use of audio books has boosted, in many areas, the number of people enjoying literature and getting through the whole "book". We will look into some of these pros and cons a bit further.
Audio books have taken over what it means to enjoy quality literature. It is not that books with actual pages and written words have become obsolete, far from it. It is just that many people have opted to listen to a book rather than have to deal with checking books out or sitting down to really focus on reading in a quiet place.
Many of the world's greatest books and novels can now be found in an audio form. For many of the best selling books, this phenomenon has boosted sales and the number of people who are actually getting to experience different genres of literature. However, this has also caused many problems, especially in the younger generations these days. Far too many young people are resorting to listening to their favorite book or "reading" their textbooks through their CD player or their IPod. This has caused the level of competency that many children and adults, once had related to spelling, grammar, punctuation and the general structure of our language to decrease. Nowadays, many people on the other side of the world are learning the English language as the second, third, forth, or more language and know more about English than the native speakers, due to such things as audio books.
Despite the negative affects audio books, among other things, has caused in the written language, the use of audio books has boosted, in many areas, the number of people enjoying literature and getting through the whole "book". Individuals that normally would not have sat down to read a novel, text book, or other piece of literature have now taken the time to pop in an audio book and listened to it each day, on the way to and from work, while driving down the freeway. Many stay at home moms can enjoy their favorite book by popping it in the CD player, while doing chores around the house.
Whatever your view is on audio books, there are pros and cons, just as there is with anything else. Whether you see it as a positive or negative change in the world of literature, is you own personal preference. Either way, the audio book is taking the literature world by storm, for better or worse.
